"X" Marks the Spot

What if I told you that you were born with a treasure map?

Would you ask "where?" Or "how?" Would you laugh off my statement passively, thinking only of your life that has, thus far, appeared barren of any "treasure"? Those are all natural reactions and ones that I had at different stages of my latest adventure... (cliff hanger).

Those who know me, know that I love to travel and seek new adventures. Very few things bring me more joy. Little did I know that both could be done daily... from the comfort of my own home! In fact, from the comfort of my own skin! This oh so convenient, free, and most valuable of adventures is that of self-discovery!

In recent months I've been pointed back to my core by close female friends around me. For some reason it is always at my lowest moments, but God surrounds me with astoundingly strong and wise women who help me realize the presence of those same attributes (strength and wisdom) in myself. Over the last week, I've attended events, performed in a play, and planned my own gatherings all around one common element: women. These events and interactions have be overwhelmingly nurturing and uplifting for me, helping me expand my perspectives and lean on God and self more.

So, as I brainstormed what to share with you all today, 'sisterhood', 'women', and 'self-worth' continued to pop up in my head. I'm a symbolism junky and lover of biology, therefore I dove into the science behind the "essence of women" and fell upon an ironic truth: it is in our genes - Chromosomes in fact: two massive, data rich structures that 'mark' us as women.

Now, whether by coincidence, luck, random chance, or-- my personal preference-- humor and purpose, the female chromosomes are 'x's. As you well know, 'x's have been used for markings since the dawn of time. One of their most notable uses is to mark the location of destinations on maps-- particularly when searching for treasure. I prefer to assume this historic use is God's ironic yet purely purposeful way of leading us to the treasure housed inside each of us: creativity, joy, strength, tenacity, kindness, wit, humor, compassion, eloquence... the list goes on! God gave us all-- men and women-- this loving marker. However, we women are doubly marked. Perhaps it's because additional reminders were needed or maybe-- just maybe!--there's double the treasure to be found.

Unfortunately, as is the case with all maps, it can be difficult--if not impossible-- to read them from the wrong perspective. So this is where other treasure bearers (formerly known as 'women') come in... Together we can help identify evidence of each others treasure that we are unable to see on our own. We are able to accompany and encourage each other on our journey of self discovery.

As is made evident in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, a good crew is critical to a successful treasure hunt. So look around you and ask, "who is my crew?" "Do I have who I need in the journey of life and self discovery?" You may find that some people are causing you to sink... make those treacherous mates walk the plank! You may also find loyal shipmates committed to riding out any storm life my throw your way until the end... even when facing death. Keep those people around. Share your treasure with them!

You are blessed beyond measure. Discover your treasure and guard it! You will face many challenges over the next few months, but rest assured that with the right crew and full awareness of the treasure God has provided you, you can weather any storm.

Heave ho, ye old salt!
