GOAL Digger

Do you ever get that feeling of deep want and desire, but doubt quickly rushes in and you come to the conclusion that it’s never going to happen? The dream you have is so big that you are afraid to even say it out loud because people might laugh at you? Well, this is part of my story.

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be an entertainer. I remember watching the Disney channel and seeing all of these spunky kids with big smiles shine on the television. At that moment, I knew that it was what I wanted. The first step to anything happening is the belief that it can happen. You can imagine the feedback I got from family members, teachers, and kids my age. My father is infamous for telling me “it’s a shot in the dark”. To everyone else, this dream was out of my reach. The only way this “dream” or big idea was going to happen was if I believed it would happen. Against all odds, I had a dream and I was determined to work hard, believe, and speak it into existence.

The second step to making a dream possible is to speak it into existence. This is the most important rule of all. Life and death is in the power of the tongue. I learned at a very young age that what you say affects yourself and your environment. I once knew a girl that always spoke negatively. For the sake of privacy, lets call her Debbie last name Downer. Debbie Downer would always complain to me about her life and how hard it was. She let her past totally consume her present. Nothing seemed to ever be going right in her life. Everyday was something new to complain about. She would always bring up the past to justify complaining about her present. Debbie was letting life pass her by because of her own words. The rule is simple. When you speak positively about your life and your current situation, you bring light to a dark or dim place. Even when it seems like it might not be going well, it is always important to stay positive and speak encouragement into the situation. Even when people around you say it can’t happen or it will never happen, you still have to speak it into existence. The whole universe was created when God spoke it into existence. Always remember your words matter so be mindful of what you say.

The last step to making dreams happen is doing. This might be the toughest part about making dreams a reality. You actually have to put in the work to make dreams come true. The difficult part about it is spending time and money to achieve a goal that might not be physically in sight. For example, I wanted to be on television and I knew I had to get an agent and take classes and start working towards it. I just graduated from college and I was a broke post-college student. I lived on an air-mattress on the floor of my parents house for two years before I got work on the screen. I remember sitting on the couch and stapling headshots to resumes and putting them in vanilla envelopes so that I could mail them out to local talent agents. I just remember that the determination that I had in my head was so strong. My dad he would walk by and question what I was doing and despite his doubts and negativity, I stayed focused. I was determined to do the work because I wanted it more than worrying about what people thought of me. People literally thought I was crazy and thought I was wasting my time. So many nights I remember my family having interventions with me, telling me that it was time to close the door on the dreams and live in reality. So many times I was told that I needed to get a real job. It was hard and discouraging at times but I never lost hope.

To conclude my story of how dreams happen, I want to encourage you and let you know that despite what obstacles you face and what doubt may come, always have hope and always believe that you can accomplish it. Remember that it starts with believing, then speaking it into existence, and finally working towards that goal even if you can’t see the end product yet.
