Thinking about Thoughts

I have been thinking a lot about thoughts lately. I don’t know about you but I get so caught up with work and the regular activities of the day; that sometimes I forget about the bigger picture. When I get home after a 10 hour work day I usually want to sit down and unwind with a TV show, just let my head go blank. Then I start to think, “Where was my mind at today? Did I give Jesus a single thought? Did I have any conversation with Him at all?”

I am not much of a reader but recently a friend gave me a book called Grace by DR. James Richards. It is actually a pretty old book but it, along with the Bible, has been challenging me on many different levels including what goes on in my mind on a daily basis.

You see, what we hear and read we then take in and start to meditate on, which affects our hearts and who we are. I was once told by a mentor that if you have hate and anger towards someone you are more likely to become like them. That didn’t make much sense to me so she explained it further. If you are constantly thinking about how that person is selfish, angry, unkind, and you never want to be like that; well guess what you are focusing on?

Our thoughts are so powerful which is why 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “Take every thought captive to obey Christ.” I find that especially as women, who are natural multi taskers and have a billion things going on in our minds at once, this can be quite difficult. But, it is definitely not impossible because with Christ nothing is impossible! Awareness is the first step, it seems kind of silly to be consciously thinking about our thoughts but we need to be. Here is something that really impacted me from Grace, “Conquering your thought life-more than any other single thing-will guard your heart against those things that rise up against the Word of God.”

I hope that this encourages and challenges you just like it has for me this past week. When your day is crazy and you have a ton of things going on, just stop and take a moment. Think about Jesus and who you are because of Him, then watch the rest of your day and attitude change for the better.
